2001: FOCUS ON CORN INSECTICIDES Compiled by Michele Trope AVENTIS CROPSCIENCE
Excited about: We see more and more corn growers enjoying the benefits of using a liquid at-plant insecticide for control of soil insecticides. The convenience and broad-spectrum control using Regent versus granular insecticides is catching the attention of a lot of corn growers. Additionally, many corn growers are discovering how to give their corn an early-season boost by applying their liquid pop-up fertilizer at the same time as Regent. The compatibility of Regent with liquid fertilizer is a big plus. BAYER CORPORATION
Excited about: Aztec 2.1G on the new Biodac carrier offers increased consistency of performance in a zero dust product DOW AGROSCIENCES
Excited about: In these tough economic times for producers, Dow AgroSciences is committed to helping retailers and farmers stay in business. Lorsban 15G has long been a staple by providing farmers corn crops with effective and affordable protection from key insect pests. Lorsban not only protects fragile corn seedlings from the devastating effects of insects such as rootworm, cutworm, wireworms and more, the seedling health properties of Lorsban protects vulnerable seed from soil-borne fungi that destroys seeds before they even have a chance to germinate. Lorsban is the only corn soil-applied insecticide with seedling health properties. Year after year, Lorsban has been helping farmers achieve maximum potential with their corn crop by helping increase yields. And the average per acre cost of Lorsban is $2 less per acre than competing products so farmers spend less and get more. Helping farmers succeed is why Lorsban has become the most trusted and widely used corn insecticide on the market today – more than 25 years since it was first made available. That’s something to get excited about. FMC CORPORATION
Growers can replace older organophosphate (OP) products with a highly-effective liquid pyrethroid-based product. Bifenthrin, the active ingredient in Capture, has been tested in trials under heavy rootworm pressure and exhibited better or equal control than the current standard rootworm products. The product controls corn rootworm (northern, western, southern Mexican), cutworm, seed corn maggot, wireworm, seed corn beetle and grubs. As a liquid pyrethroid, Capture poses no dust inhalation problems and requires no posting under worker protection safety rules. Capture should be applied as a T-banded spray over the open furrow before the closure wheels. The product should be applied at a 0.3 ounce rate per 1,000 feet of row or 6.2 ounces of product an acre for 30-inch row spacing. A one-gallon jug will treat 25 acres. Capture has been sold for foliar pests in corn and will be readily available this season for planting-time use. Excited about: FMC Corporation will launch a new pre-emergence soybean herbicide under the trade name Gauntlet. Gauntlet was registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 16, 2000. The new herbicide combines sulfentrazone, the active ingredient in Authority herbicide, and cloransulam-methyl, the active ingredient in FirstRate herbicide manufactured by Dow Agrosciences. These two chemistries are a perfect match because sulfentrazone provides excellent control of broadleaf weeds like waterhemp, nightshade, lambsquarters and nutsedge, while cloransulam-methyl is outstanding on weeds like giant ragweed, cocklebur and wild sunflower. Gauntlet will control a wider spectrum of broadleaf weeds than any other pre-emergence soybean herbicide on the market. Furthermore, Gauntlet can be applied to all soybeans regardless of soil type, soil pH or corn rotation. When combined with a grass herbicide like Treflan, Pendimax or Command, Gauntlet will control grasses and broadleaves economically through full canopy of the soybean plant with one pre-emergence application. ZENECA AG PRODUCTS
Warrior T is registered nationally for control of all major above-ground insect pests in field corn, seed corn, sweet corn and popcorn. Warrior T also provides broad-spectrum insect control in alfalfa, brassica crops, garlic, head lettuce, onions, rice, sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers, tomatoes, triticale and wheat. Excited about: Zeneca products are market leaders because of the value they deliver to growers. Force and Warrior T, advanced pytethroid insecticides, provide excellent performance against a broad spectrum of insect pests at low use rates. CD Crop Decisions, January 2001 |
